Vegetable garden dreaming

I love days like today.  It's so nice to feel productive without feeling crazed.  I managed to run some errands, slowly started to dig my way out from under the mess I call my house and even started dinner.

I'm sitting here typing at my desk and waiting for my sister to bring the girls home from their "Aunt Heidi Day".  The aroma of roasted vegetables is circulating through the downstairs.  It reminds me of my in-laws wonderful garden and how much the girls enjoyed it.  At least once a day they would walk up the hill in grandma and grandpa's backyard, open the makeshift gate and walk the rows of vegetables.  Grandma would instruct them which vegetables to pick and place in the gathering basket.  They delighted in the dirt covered bounty and I devoured as many sunripened tomatoes as possible.  Fresh off the vine, warmed by the sun and sprinkled with salt...mmmm.

I dream about the day when we will live in a climate where growing vegetables is less of a challenge.  Nothing too ambitious, just big enough to fill my salad bowl.

I'm off to finish my soup.  I've never made it before, I'll let you know how it turns out.

I've noticed that my gratitude list has been a bit neglected lately.  I may not have posted it but I'm always adding to it.

Daily Grateful

  • Knowing that summer is more than half over
  • Thinking about Christmas and picturing THREE kids crowded around the tree this year
  • Tylenol and a husband that pampers me when I'm sick
  • Access to acupuncture, network chiropractic care and really good prenatal care

What a beautiful garden!! :) I saw Dave Owens speak about gardening here and he recommended taking the summer off and growing veggies fall, winter and spring. Of course I know better than him ;) so I once again have been growing all summer and I have a bunch of weedy beds full of shriveling fruit to prove it. Actually, we do have beautiful watermelon so next year I think I'll stick with something like that for summer. ;)

I'll have to try the recipe. Trader Joe's sells a tomato and roasted red pepper soup that I love (closest I can find to Campbell's cream of tomato which I stopped eating because of the HFCS and all the junk in it), and this recipe sounds really similar.

I'm going to attempt gardening next year. Our new house has two raised beds already, I just have to overcome the fact that I kill every plant I touch. ;)

You ladies inspire me with your gardening. Now that we are a dog free family (i.e., no dog waste in the backyard) we are hoping to build and plant a small fall garden.

Claire - I really liked the soup, try it and let me know what you think!
