Phoenix Children's Photographer | M is for Mischief
Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 2:23PM Mischief with a capital M
When Elise was born I nicknamed her my Zen baby. Calm and quiet she was sleeping through the night at 5 weeks. Now at 2.5 she is easy going, full of smiles and (much like her dad and sister) has a very silly streak. But you know what they say about the quiet ones.
I can’t let her out of my eyesight for very long because she’s sure to find trouble. I think most moms would appreciate their children playing quietly with their siblings but not me. I know that the moment it’s quiet Elise is making mischief. Many days it’s nothing more than an inconvenience, like tearing papers or pushing all of the freshly folded laundry onto the floor. Some days it’s heart stopping, like the day I found her sitting on the kitchen floor in a pool of wine with a broken bottle in her hand and glass shards all over her legs or trying to ‘decorate’ the electrical outlets. Thankfully she’s remained unhurt.
Recently, she’s started drawing on the walls. I know that to Elise her drawings are works of art that she’s gifted us but they drive me crazy. Orange crayon and black pencil marks aren’t quite what I had in mind for decoration. I recently touched up the paint downstairs and I was shocked to find so many previously unnoticed drawings. Every time I came across a new orange scribble I had to giggle. I wonder what Elise must have been thinking when she was creating her “art”. Did she feel sneaky, rebellious or just curious? Fortunately, she seems to have moved past the wall drawings. These days she’s very curious about mommy’s make-up drawer. The other day I found her in the hall outside my bedroom smiling proudly. She ran up to me and animatedly told me about her “make-up”. So for now I’m revisiting all of my baby proofing, watching her like a hawk and giving daily reminders that crayons are for paper and make-up is for big ladies.
I snapped a picture of her largest wall installation in the hall outside my bedroom. I call it “Squiggles” in #2 pencil on drywall. She was also kind enough to model her fancy big lady make-up for me.
