Kate is my first born. She entered this world on a beautiful spring day in March 2005. Short (less than 20 inches long) and half an ounce shy of 9lbs she was adorably chubby. I can still hear one of the nurses yell, “look at those thighs!”. Thankfully, he wasn’t talking about mine. If I had to pick just a few words describe Kate I would say she’s sweet, funny, amazingly creative, fiercely protective and loving toward her little sister, LOUD, sassy and will one day rule the world. That’s her plan anyway and I have no doubt she can pull it off.
She tells me she’s going to be EVERYTHING when she grows up. Everything except an astronaut because her best friend told her that black holes are dangerous. Famous chef, pediatric anesthesiologist and superhero are always listed at the top of her favorite future professions. I think she should add personal stylist to the list. Since she was old enough to walk Kate's had a very defined sense of self when it comes to clothes and accessories. I’ve learned over the years that as long as they're weather appropriate, it’s best just to let her dress herself. Personally I don’t think an orange flowered shirt, pink skirt and striped tights match but if it makes her happy and gets her ready to start the day on time then so be it!
The fun part of letting Kate dress herself is the surprise factor. You can tell her she needs to get dressed because you’re leaving the house in 10 minutes and you just never know what she’ll be wearing when she comes downstairs. In the early days of parenting this sent me over the edge. I wanted her to look her best. Or at the very least, like she didn’t get dressed while blindfolded. As Kate got older I started to realize that being able to dress herself was very important to her. Vetoing her outfit was a form of invalidating Kate. The whole process left us sad and frustrated. Things became much easier once I learned to relax and let it go. So now I just make sure the laundry is clean and she does the rest!
We were getting ready for a walk this afternoon and this is how she met me at the bottom of the stairs. Green and pink (one of my favorite color combinations) with a butterfly belt and lovely white hat. I said she reminded me of watermelons and springtime. Giggling, we both agreed that watermelon season can’t get here soon enough and then she let me take her picture. Happy Sunday everyone!
